Gynaecology and obstetrics
Caring for women, and for birth
Gynaecological care and pregnancy care share one requirement: continuity, from one consultation to the next.
Obstetrics and gynaecology covers two sides. The first follows women's health throughout life: screening consultations, contraception, menstrual disorders, menopause. The second accompanies pregnancy, from the first ultrasound scan through to delivery and the weeks that follow.
Obstetrics is the discipline where organisation counts as much as technique. An available delivery room, an operating theatre reachable without delay and a team on hand are what make it possible to face the unforeseen, which, in obstetrics, is the rule rather than the exception.

Frequently asked questions
How often are pregnancy appointments scheduled?
Care usually involves one consultation per month, then more frequent appointments in the final trimester, with ultrasound scans at key stages. The exact schedule is agreed with the doctor at the first consultation.
Is any preparation needed before a pelvic ultrasound?
For a suprapubic scan you will be asked to arrive with a full bladder; for a transvaginal scan no preparation is needed. Which one applies is confirmed when you book.
What should I bring for the delivery?
Your maternity records, your most recent scans, your laboratory results and your identity documents. The list of personal items to pack is given to you during the third-trimester consultations.
