General surgery

Operating, then supporting recovery

An operation is not judged in theatre, but by how the patient recovers from it.

General surgery treats conditions of the abdomen and abdominal wall: appendicitis, hernias, the gallbladder, conditions of the colon, thyroid and soft-tissue surgery. Many of these procedures are now performed laparoscopically, through small incisions.

The pathway matters as much as the procedure: surgical consultation, pre-operative assessment, anaesthetic consultation, operation, then monitoring and follow-up. Each step exists for a reason, and it is their uninterrupted sequence that shortens convalescence.

Frequently asked questions

What does the pre-operative assessment involve?

Laboratory tests, imaging where it is needed, and a compulsory anaesthetic consultation. That consultation is when to declare your current medication, your allergies and your medical history.

What is laparoscopic surgery?

The surgeon operates through small incisions, guided by a camera. Recovery is generally less painful and the return to activity quicker than with open surgery.

How much time off should I expect?

It depends on the operation, your occupation and how recovery goes. The surgeon estimates it at the consultation and reviews it after the operation.
